Bringing National Budget Into Community Dialogue

How does Botswana’s national budget affect ordinary citizens, and what does it mean for the country’s economic future? These were some of the questions explored at the inaugural Tlokweng Budget Speech Review, hosted by the Honourable Member of Parliament for Tlokweng, Phenyo Segokgo.

The event brought together economists, analysts and community leaders to unpack the national budget and discuss the issues shaping Botswana’s economy. Conversations focused on fluctuations in diamond revenue, rising youth unemployment and the need to invest in infrastructure, innovation and digital transformation to support future growth.

Community participation was a key part of the review, with attendees asking questions and sharing their views on the country’s economic challenges and opportunities. The discussions created an opportunity for residents to better understand the budget and engage with issues that affect their livelihoods and the future of their communities.

Boitekanelo College was proud to participate in this initiative, recognising the importance of creating spaces where citizens can engage with national issues and learn from experts. Such opportunities reflect Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, by supporting learning beyond the classroom and encouraging informed participation in society.

The review also highlighted the value of bringing public representatives, experts and community members together to discuss decisions that affect the country. This aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, which promotes transparent governance and inclusive decision-making.

As the first event of its kind in Tlokweng, the budget review provided a foundation for continued community engagement on Botswana’s economic priorities. It reinforced the importance of making national issues accessible to citizens and ensuring that public dialogue remains part of the conversation about the country’s future.
