Preparing Students to Stand Out Beyond the Classroom
For students preparing to enter an increasingly competitive world of work, academic knowledge is only part of what is needed to build a successful professional journey. Confidence, communication, personal branding and the ability to present oneself professionally can be just as important.
These were some of the key lessons explored during Standard Chartered Bank's Atlega Mentorship Session, which brought Boitekanelo College students together with executives from Standard Chartered Bank for candid conversations about navigating the transition from student life to the workplace.
The discussions moved beyond traditional career advice, focusing on practical questions students face as they begin building their professional identities. Students explored the importance of developing a personal brand while still in school, being intentional about their professional presence and understanding how their use of social media can influence future opportunities.
The session also created an opportunity for students to engage directly with experienced professionals and gain perspectives on what it takes to stand out in today's world of work. These conversations offered students a chance to connect what they are learning in the classroom with the expectations and realities of professional environments.
Public speaking formed another important part of the experience. In partnership with Eloquent Speakers Toastmasters Club, students took part in practical activities designed to strengthen their communication and presentation skills. Rather than simply listening, they were encouraged to participate, organise their thoughts and speak with greater clarity and confidence.
For some, this meant stepping outside their comfort zones and finding the confidence to speak even when it felt uncomfortable. These experiences are valuable not only in professional settings, but also in academic environments where students are expected to communicate ideas, collaborate with others and advocate for themselves.
The session reflects Boitekanelo College's commitment to providing students with an exceptional experience that extends beyond academic instruction. By creating opportunities for mentorship, professional exposure and practical skills development, the College is helping students build the confidence and capabilities they need to navigate their future careers.
The partnership with Standard Chartered Atlega Mentorship Programme and Eloquent Speakers Toastmasters Club demonstrates the value of bringing industry and professional expertise into the student experience. Through such engagements, students are exposed to perspectives, skills and networks that can complement their academic training and prepare them to make a meaningful contribution in the workplace and beyond.
